A broken bicycle can be replaced. A broken collarbone will usually heal.

But a concussion can be different.

You may walk away from the crash. You may even look perfectly fine. And still, something has changed.

Your concentration. Your energy. Your patience. Your memory. Your ability to work, to participate, to be present.

And suddenly the accident is no longer only yours.

It enters the life you share with other people — your partner, your children, your family. The people who depend on you not simply coming home, but coming home as yourself.

That is why I believe the meaning of bicycle protection is about to change.

For decades, the helmet industry has been built around the one catastrophic crash: protect the skull, absorb the impact, help prevent the worst.

That remains essential.

But I believe concussion will become one of the biggest safety concerns for the next generation of riders.

Not because riders will suddenly become experts in brain biomechanics.

They will not.

They will simply become far more aware of what a concussion can mean to a life.

Weeks away from work. Months of reduced capacity. Problems with concentration, memory and fatigue. Strain on relationships. Less ability to be present with children, partners and the people around you.

The fear will increasingly not only be:

Will I survive the crash?

It will also be:

Who will I be after it?

And that changes what people will expect from a helmet.

Many riders may feel this problem has already been addressed. After all, modern helmets increasingly come with additional technologies intended to improve brain protection.

And some of those technologies may be very good at what they do.

But they are still additions.

They begin with the conventional helmet and then add something to make it behave differently.

That distinction may not have mattered much to consumers in the past.

I believe it will matter much more in the future.

Because when concussion itself becomes the concern, riders may begin asking a different question:

Was this helmet designed around the problem I am worried about — or was protection against that problem added afterwards?

An add-on can be sophisticated.

It can be clever.

It can be effective at what it is designed to do.

But it is still an add-on. A correction. A repair.

A way of asking an old architecture to solve a problem it was never originally designed around.

Perhaps we should stop asking how much more technology we can add to the conventional helmet.

Perhaps we should start asking whether the conventional helmet itself is still the right place to begin.
